A report on your partnership in Bible translation through Jim and Dorothea Lander   April 2012

How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. (Psalms 31:19, NIV)

 Nestling Down in Good Things
God certainly has stored up an abundance of good things for us as we settle into our new nest. We’re finding new stores, doctors, dentists, specialists, new insurances and a surprise or two while unpacking boxes. The seemingly never-ending lists of “To Do’s” each day is getting shorter. Thank you to everyone of you who has helped! Our son, Will, and his wife, Jodi, sent us three other “nestings,” in the form of a movable chicken tractor (little rolling A-frame house) and three Dominique laying hens. Their eggs taste magnificent. The hens eagerly scratch the fallow garden, eat weeds, grass and bugs, tilling and fertilizing the area for future planting as we roll them along day by day. Meanwhile, masses of bees busily pollinate the pear, apple, cherry and plum trees!

Home Office
I, Dorothea, am trying to set up a home office. The small, shared workspace on Division Street in Portland, Oregon, will close at the end of May. We need to haul a few big and small things from Portland to Lebanon very soon. If you’re in the area and you’d like to help with your pick-up truck, please email or call us. We also need to either erect a Tough Shed-type home office space, or find an inexpensive trailer to convert into a home office. I’ve tried many spots inside the house already, but none seem to provide the necessary quiet for uninterrupted work. Jim, on the other hand, has the amazing ability to block out everything that happens around him. So he will continue to coordinate the Greek project for Wycliffe from the living room recliner.

The Team
Wycliffe’s Children’s Communications Team has functioned so well during our move. I just have to say, “Well done, team!”

Good News Bears & Such
During the last two months, I have enjoyed speaking to children’s groups at school chapels and churches. Having the best materials (according to the opinion of others, including myself) to inform, challenge and involve children in Bible translation has made this a snap to fit into our busy schedules.

 The Family Team
It does take a family to care for family. I cannot count how many times I have heard encouraging words something like, “Just because you live in the house with Mother, doesn’t mean that everything falls on your shoulders.” Or, “Is this a good weekend for Mom to come to our house?” Our siblings are God-sent provisions to care for both of our mothers in a way that pleases Him. Not every family may find this true, but God has blessed us and our mothers with praise-worthy family.

The Mothers Amazing
Jim’s mom and my mom are both amazing women. God has blessed us so much through them. They have both settled snugly into their respective areas of the home, each with a private sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. Jim’s mother has enjoyed outside walks with her walker on sunny days and my mother enjoys her new Wednesday bowling league. We all enjoy fellowshipping back at Lebanon First Baptist, where I first attended after meeting the Lord and where Jim has attended since he was born. We two Dorotheas also celebrated April birthdays together on Easter Sunday.

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Scott Bybee
Evangel is back from her year in Haiti with Medical Teams International. On February 19, she and Scott Bybee married in Newport, Oregon. Both attend Imago Dei, a solid group of serious, young followers of Jesus, here in Portland, Oregon. God gave such beautiful weather that we enjoyed an outdoor wedding in February—such a miracle on the Oregon coast! We already feel connected to Scott’s family. Dorothy, Scott’s mother, was president of the missionary circle named after us when they attended Lebanon First Baptist and we were in Africa. She remembers sending birthday cards and gifts to our family many long years ago. Jim and I rejoice with both Scott and Evangel, who have made their home in Portland.

Thank You!
Again, we thank each and everyone of you who pray and give so that the work of Bible translation can go forward. You are helping to accelerate the pace and bring God’s Word to the last languages on earth. The numbers continue fall. The most recent number of languages awaiting God’s Word is down to 2,040, according to numbers we saw recently. Rejoice!

Our Partnership Together

ANGEL TRACKS IN THE SNOW: You prayed and the book is hot off the press! This new children’s book tells a true account of God’s power displayed in the Himalaya Mountains. When God wants a people group to have His Word, even the highest mountains in the world don’t stand in His way! Read the story while your pre-reading child colors a picture on the facing page. Complete one page a day, or read it many times over, coloring more parts of the pictures each time through. Grades 2-4 can read and color all by themselves. Wycliffe also offers free online supplemental lessons, which will soon be online. Enjoy a 1) second true, interactive story of God’s power amongst the same people group, 2) simulation that gives children a feel for what it means to walk by faith, and 3) 50-verse topical study of angels in the Bible. Coming soon: 4) angel picture activities for two age groups! (Can you tell that I’m a little excited?) Angel Tracks in the Snow is now available at www.wycliffe.org/Resources/Shop/Children.aspx. Supplemental lessons will be available soon at http://www.wycliffe.org/Resources/Kids/FreeCurriculum.aspx.

NEW/RETURNING TEAM MEMBER: Leanna Doran has returned from a term of teaching missionary children in South America. She agreed to work on our children’s communication team again during her home time. We thank the Lord for her valuable contributions to the team. Welcome again, Leanna!

MY VOLCANO ADVENTURE REVISION: Please continue to pray for DiscipleLand staff as they put together the revised curriculum. Soon I hope to write to you that it is hot off the press, too!

GREEK PROJECT: Jim continues to volunteer about eight hours a week on this project from his recliner at home. He helps to decide, for instance, which of the 20+ options for the Greek word “in” to recommend to translators in each instance throughout the New Testament. They work with every single New Testament word, in its context. He says it’s like eating candy. He loves it!  Six hot- off-the press New Testaments at a Scripture dedication remind us why we do what we do.

Family News

PARENTS: These years seem appointed for helping our brothers and sisters to care for our parents. With my father gone for over forty years and Jim’s father now confined to a memory care facility, both of our mothers need  assistance of one kind or another. Thankfully, God’s Word makes our course clear when it says, “If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God” (1 Timothy 5:4, NIV). Jim and his sisters have been taking turns staying with his mother. My mother has lived with us for the past eight years, spending many weekends with my sister’s family. After talking and praying, Jim and I have agreed to move to Lebanon with my mother for as long as Jim’s mother needs us. This arrangement will allow us to continue working with Wycliffe from a home office. Most other Wycliffe members, who do not live in Orlando these days, do the same.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS: We thank the Lord for our sisters and brothers. Most live nearby. We would appreciate your prayers that we can work well together to care for our own families, as Scripture says, and repay our parents. May all of our lives be pleasing to God.

CHILDREN: Evangel’s year with Medical Teams International in Haiti comes to an end in January, when she will move back to Portland. We look forward to that reunion, and also to spending Christmas with Elizabeth, Will and their families.

Prayer and Praise
PRAISE: Children have created hundreds of Scripture posters with newly-translated verses. Then they mailed them to children who are now learning to read in their own languages of Uganda, Africa. With lessons at http://www.wycliffe.org/Resources/Kids/FreeCurriculum/SenegalGivingProject.aspx, children here give God’s Word to children there, who read it to their family, friends and neighbors.

PRAISE: God has provided one more person, skilled in Greek, to join the team Jim coordinates. This answer to prayer will help accelerate Bible translation worldwide.

PRAY: Because the Greek team lost one member and gained one, please continue to pray for two more people. If you know anyone with Greek skills, please contact Jim so they can begin to dialog.

PRAY: Please continue to pray that  God will raise up additional funds so that we can meet Wycliffe’s ministry budget.

September 2011
Ethiopia Unit Study for the Discovery Center in Orlando
Thank you for praying for the new Ethiopia unit. Children’s groups that tour the Wycliffe Discovery Center in Orlando this fall will learn so much. The Education Staff is training to use this new material now. Please pray that God gives them stamina and a clear message as they shepherd many groups through this tour from September through Christmas. Please pray for the children, too, that they will begin an active involvement with Bible translation, helping to eradicate Bible poverty in their own generation!

 My Volcano Adventure Revision
Thank you for praying for our little team of three, and the staff at Through the Bible Publishing and DiscipleLand. We have submitted all of our revisions. Now DiscipleLand is working hard to incorporate those changes before sending it back to us for one final look. The new curriculum should be available before the end of the year, perhaps before fall concludes.

Lessons to Accompany New Children’s Books
Please continue praying for the two new books going through the publishing process: Angel Tracks in the Snow and Monkey Chatter. Now that My Volcano Adventure’s revision doesn’t take up nearly all of our time, we can turn to finishing free lessons and Bible studies that augment the book themes and messages. Please also pray for Nathan Ensz, the husband of one of our authors. Ask God to make it clear to doctors what disease has attacked this young father, husband and youth pastor. He needs all the energy and good health a person can possess!

 Greek Project
Translation teams around the world work much more quickly because of the expertise of this little team of Greek experts. Rejoice with us that one new member has begun this month! They only need only one additional person. If you know any professors of Greek, or professors of Greek emeritus, to whom you might mention this need, please do! Ask them to contact Jim at jalander1953@comcast.net.

Parents
Please continue to pray that doctors can diagnose the disabling neurological problem Jim’s mother is experiencing. She grows weaker and continues to undergo medical testing. As a strong believer, she does not worry nor necessarily ask only for healing. She does ask that God be glorified through even this difficulty in her life. As her children, we want to do all that God asks of us and honor Him in caring for her, as well. Jim’s father still receives excellent treatment at a memory care facility, but he continues a steady decline.

Dorothea’s mother again bowls on three senior leagues each week, and plays with her great-grandson, Ace. Her new knee holds her up and bends like new,
at 95!

Thank you and please pray.
Again, words cannot express our thanks to you who faithfully pray and give as partners in the task of Bible translation. This month, during my (Dorothea) annual performance appraisal review, in only one area did I not receive an “excellent” or “very good” rating. That had to do with the funds Wycliffe requires us to raise. Our financial team has increased by a few and we have lost almost the same number, so we still do not meet Wycliffe’s recommended budget and remain at about $700 a month under budget. Would you please pray that God will raise up additional people to join our partnership team? If your church, friends or small group might consider joining our team, we would appreciate you connecting us!

Financial Partnership
For a tax-deductible receipt you may send financial gifts to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628200, Orlando FL 32862-8200, or call 1-(800) WYCLIFFE, 1-(800) 992-5433, to set up a tax-deductible electronic funds transfer to Wycliffe directly through your bank. You may include a separate note suggesting a preference that it be directed toward the ministry of Jim and Dorothea Lander (221845). Online giving is now possible at http://www.wycliffe.org/Give/MissionaryMinistries.aspx/ by typing in one of our names.

June and July 2011
Children’s Prayer Journal in French—NOW POSTED ON OUR SITE!
Thank you for praying that we’d find a good way to make the Children’s Prayer Journal in French available. It is now posted on our Wycliffe USA Kids Free Resource page. You may still access it on the Wycliffe France site at http://www.wycliffe.fr/fileadmin/user_upload/resources/journal_priere-enfant_Finale.pdf/, as well.

Ethiopia Unit Study for the Discovery Center in Orlando
Thank you for praying for the new Ethiopia unit for children’s groups touring the Wycliffe Discovery Center in Orlando this fall. We expect to finish on time for the Education Staff to begin using the learning stations this fall.

My Volcano Adventure Revision
Please pray for our little team of three, and the staff at Through the Bible Publishing and DiscipleLand. We have a due date of the end of July to revise this curriculum. Serious editing, revision and creating new ways of teaching this material need God’s touch. We rely on Him to fill our minds with effective teaching methods.

Lessons to Accompany New Children’s Books
Thank you, again, for praying for the two new books going through the publishing process. Please continue to pray for our little team as we write lessons and Bible studies to augment the themes and messages, especially in Angel Tracks (working title). Again, I rejoice to learn so much from God’s Word while doing this word study. It forms the groundwork for subsequent children’s lessons. I must admit, the Bible corrected some of my own misconceptions about angels! Employing various teaching styles delights my heart and brings the subject to life in my own experiences. May children also learn what the Bible teaches about angels, God’s ministering spirits.

Greek Project
Rejoice with us that God tapped one additional person on the shoulder to join the team! Jim needs only one additional person to join the project. Do you know any professors of Greek, or professors of Greek emeritus, to whom you might mention this need? If so, and if they express any interest, would you please ask them to contact Jim at jalander1953@comcast.net/?

Parents
Would you please pray that doctors find the root of quite disabling neurological problems Jim’s mother is experiencing? As a strong believer, she is not worried nor necessarily asking only for healing. She does ask that God be glorified through even this difficulty in her life. Like Joseph, she believes that difficulties can come into our lives that look evil and sometimes are even meant to harm us, but God uses them for good. Sometimes He even uses them to save many people! (Genesis 50:20) As her children, we want to do all that God asks of us and honor Him in caring for her, as well. Jim’s father still receives excellent treatment at a memory care facility.

Dorothea’s mother is back, practicing bowling twice a week at 95 years young. Rejoice! Her new knee functions extremely well.

Thank you and please pray
We thank God for three new financial partners this last month! Again, words cannot express our thanks to you for faithfully praying and giving as partners in the task of Bible translation. Please continue to pray that God increases our financial team. While we were only “in the red” by $200 last month, our 12-month average remains at $700 below Wycliffe’s ministry budget. Four partner’s gifts were credited to this month’s income, but they likely came in for the previous month so we received “double” gifts from them. That boosted our total this month, but made last month’s extra low. That’s just how averages work. Some months are low and others are high.

You can keep up with prayer requests online, now at https://jarti.wordpress.com/praying-together/ and also give under one other tab at https://jarti.wordpress.com/ministry-partnership-ops/, along with reading what is going on in our everyday lives under some of the other tabs across the top.

Financial Partnership:
For a tax-deductible receipt you may send financial gifts to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 628200, Orlando FL 32862-8200, or call 1-(800) WYCLIFFE, 1-(800) 992-5433, to set up a tax-deductible electronic funds transfer to Wycliffe directly through your bank. April and May 2011

Orlando HQ Week
Thank you for praying. Our Children’s Communication Team received two days of valuable training during this year’s annual trip. God also arranged some divine appointments to provide information that will help us move forward on new projects for children. Did you know that children can make chalkboards out of a cloth that’s commonly found in fabric stores, and that schools in Cameroon need individual chalkboards? More on that later…

New Children’s Books Coming
Rejoice, the artwork is finished! Now teams are working on textual edits for both new children’s books. Please ask God to enable all these talented folks to know His guidance clearly so that many children come to understand the task of Bible translation and how they can play a role themselves in the greater task.

Vacation Bible School Supplement
Am I nagging to say again that I’d like you to speak to the person at your church who chooses children’s curriculum, encouraging them to supplement this year’s vacation Bible school with one of our two “Five Day Schedule” options at http://www.wycliffe.org/Resources/Kids/FreeCurriculum/SenegalGivingProject.aspx/? Summer draws near!

Children’s Prayer Journal in French—DONE!
You can find the Children’s Prayer Journal in French at  http://www.wycliffe.fr/wycliffe-et-vous/prier/. Scroll down and you will see this link below the numbered points, 1, 2, and 3: Nouveauté : Journal de prière pour les enfants à télécharger. Click on the link and the Children’s Prayer Journal in French will open up for free download. Be patient. It is a quite a large file!

Now we are working to find the best way to make it known and available to those who’d would like to use it in the Americas and all of the French-speaking areas of the world like Cameroon, Haiti, Senegal, parts of Asia and many others!

Ethiopia Unit Study for the Discovery Center in Orlando
Thank you for praying for the new Ethiopia unit for children’s groups that will tour the Wycliffe Discovery Center in Orlando this fall. God is giving us great progress in writing and collecting photos. Some photos we’ve been given, simply delight our eyes and make us smile!

Greek Project
Jim and the team are still in search of two additional people to join the project so that it can move forward more quickly. Do you know any professors of Greek, or professors of Greek emeritus, that you could talk with?

Mother’s New Knee
My mother, Dorothea Lines, really wants to return to bowling soon. Please ask that as God reminds her to diligently do her physical therapy exercises, her muscles will strengthen. She walks without her walker now but needs more strength and balance. We enjoyed celebrating her 95th birthday last Saturday! My brother and his wife even made a video Skype call (computer-to-computer) from Arizona so Mom could see and hear them, and vice versa. What a techie Grandma!

Thank you and please pray!
Again, words cannot express our thanks to you for faithfully praying and giving so that Jim and I can continue our parts in the task of Bible translation. Please continue to pray that God increases our financial team since some partners have gone to be with Jesus this last year, others have become ill or retired. We currently need almost $700 more each month to meet Wycliffe’s modest ministry budget.

You may include a separate note suggesting a preference that it be directed toward the ministry of Jim and Dorothea Lander (221845). Online giving is now possible at http://www.wycliffe.org/Give/MissionaryMinistries.aspx/ by typing in one of our names, but beware. It will not work if you type in both of our names together and the system does count off for incorrect spelling, just like in grade school.  You can also use the online “Invitation to Partnership” at http://www.wycliffe.org/Partnership.aspx?mid=CACE59/.

March and April 2011

Orlando HQ Again Thank you for praying. Evangel came to Orlando in March, instead of me (Dorothea) flying to Haiti. We thoroughly enjoyed four days together. I accepted it as a bountiful gift from my Father. The following week, the Children’s Communication Team arrived and we completed a week of profitable meetings, interspersed with good food, good fellowship and a bit of fun.

New Children’s Books Coming Please pray that everyone involved clearly hears God’s direction while we discuss the two children’s books to be published by Wycliffe this year. Pray that they will most effectively inspire and involve children in the task of Bible translation.

Also, I encourage you to consider purchasing my new, favorite Bible storybook for young readers, or for you to read and discuss with your children or grandchildren from DiscipleLand, available at http://www.discipleland.com/preschool-curriculum/awesome-god-bible-storybook.html/.

My Awesome God Bible Storybook

Vacation Bible School Supplement I’d like to remind you again to speak to the person at your church who chooses children’s curriculum, encouraging them to supplement this year’s vacation Bible school with one of our two “Five Day Schedule” options at http://www.wycliffe.org/Resources/Kids/FreeCurriculum/SenegalGivingProject.aspx/.

Children’s Prayer Journal in French Please continue to pray for the completion of the Children’s Prayer Journal in French.

Serving the Discovery Center in Orlando Please pray for our team as we write a new Ethiopia unit for children’s groups that tour the Wycliffe Discovery Center in Orlando. The unit begins this fall.

Children who Made Scripture Posters We received this note from the Uganda Scripture Use Coordinator: Warm greetings from Uganda! Just wanted to let you know that the package of all those Bible verse posters ya’ll did at your VBS arrived safely. Ya’ll did a super job decorating them. Thanks soooo much! The Nyole, Bwisi and Gwere kids will LOVE them! I’ll be distributing the posters to their appropriate places in the coming weeks and months. They have to go to opposite sides of the country. I loved the photos you sent of the kids coloring the posters and praying over them. That just really blessed me. God’s Word is definitely making an impact here and all your VBS work will make a huge splash in the kingdom of God as well as a huge whack to the kingdom of darkness. Thanks to “your” kids for blessing “my” kids…. bring Light to them. That’s serious ambassador work, believe me!

Greek Project Please continue to pray that God will add two more qualified people to the project Jim coordinates so that it can move forward more quickly.

Mother’s New Knee My mother, Dorothea, had knee replacement surgery January 25, 2011. She now walks without her walker and has over 110 degree flexion in that knee. Her dramatic recovery, at nearly 95 years old (April 9), has surprised all the medical personnel. Thank you for praying!

Thank you and please pray! Again, words cannot express our thanks to you for faithfully continuing your part of our teamwork together for the Bibleless peoples of the world. You pray and give so that Jim and I can continue our parts in the task of Bible translation.
– Please pray that God increases our financial team, since some partners have gone to be with Jesus this last year while others have become ill or retired.
– Please pray that we do our part in inviting others to join the team.
– Please ask that those people God has chosen will find great joy in obedience to His call for resources.
We currently need approximately $650 more each month to meet Wycliffe’s modest ministry budget. Wycliffe has now made giving easy with the online “Invitation to Partnership” at http://www.wycliffe.org/Partnership.aspx?mid=CACE59/.
